International Day of Women Scientists

 

Today is International Women's Day in Science.

Iasi had the first University in Romania and had the privilege of being the hometown that contributed to the formation of strong female personalities.

 

The first female university professor in Romania - Elena Pușcariu-Densușianu (1875-1966), organized and led, as a doctor, the first Ophthalmology Clinic (Iași, 1920), being also, worldwide, the first female university professor at an ophthalmology clinic.

 

The first female surgeon in Romania - Marta Trancu-Rainer (Iași County, 1875 - Bucharest, 1950) graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Iași; performed surgery during World War I, saving hundreds of lives; she became a member of the Romanian Academy of Medicine (1935) and an honorary member of the Biology Society of Bucharest.

 

The first woman lawyer in Romania - Ella Negruzzi (Iași County, 1876 - Bucharest, 1948) - graduated from the Faculty of Law at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (1913); she was the first woman lawyer admitted to the bar; she worked for the granting of women's socio-political rights, getting involved, together with Romanian intellectuals, in the fight against fascism and war, advocating for freedom and national independence.

 

The first female forensic doctor in Europe - Maria Cicherschi, married Ropală (1881 - 1973) was born in Iași and graduated from the "Oltea Doamna" Girls' High School, then the Faculty of Medicine. She studied in Paris disciplines such as Forensic Medicine and Forensic Psychiatry and obtained in 1907 the title of "Doctor of Medicine" with the thesis "Contributions to the biological study of female crime from a forensic point of view."
