Copou Park

It is on the left as we climb the hill, after Al. I. Cuza. In the 18th century, the Phanariot Matei Ghica built a gazebo in Copou, which was used for rest and recreation. However, at that time there was no public garden, to which all citizens had free access. The decision to set it up was taken by the ruler Mihail Sturdza in 1834. The chosen place was on Podul Verde Street, on the place where the city's post office used to be. The garden was extended in 1849 and 1852, by buying neighboring lands, and from 1860 it was lit with lanterns.

In the park you can see the oldest monument in Romania: the Monument of Constitutional Laws, known as the Obelisk with Lions, made by Mikhail Singurov, in 1834, after a project by Gh. Asachi.
In the center of Copou Park, near Teiul lui Eminescu (a real place of pilgrimage for romantics), there is the bust of Eminescu and the bust of his old friend Ion Creangă, erected in 1932.

Later, the "Junimea" Alley was arranged with the bronze busts of its members.

In June 1984, a museum was opened near Teiul lui Eminescu. The plans were made by the architect Virgiliu Onofrei, the museum being inaugurated in 1989, on the centenary of the poet's death.

In June in Iaşi, in Copou Park, every year since 1982, the National Fair of Traditional Ceramics Cucuteni 5000 is organized, an exhibition that brings together families of potters from all ceramics centers of the country, as well as representatives of important pottery centers in the Republic of Moldova.
