Roznovanu Palace
The local administration appeared as an institution in 1832, through the provisions of the Organic Regulations. These required the establishment of "City Ephoria" (Greek term).
Eforia's duties were to collect taxes, balance expenses with the amounts collected, protect merchants, justify expenses incurred. In 1851, its name was changed to "City Council", under which it functioned until 1864 when it received the name of Iaşi City Hall. This change was not long-lasting either, but was changed again on January 15, 1949, when a provision appeared in the Official Gazette establishing the establishment of the People's Council of the City of Iasi.
The Communal Law, promulgated by Al. I. Cuza, on March 31, 1864, provided the obligation according to which “Each commune is obliged to have a house of the commune called the City Hall.”, But also “The commune takes care of its own interests and administers itself in accordance with the laws. It forms a legal entity. "The last provision aimed at granting increased autonomy to local communities. The most important decisions regarding the administration of the locality were taken by the Communal Council, by vote, and “The administration of the affairs of each commune is entrusted to a person bearing the primary name”, the latter being appointed by the ruler.
The Communal Council decided on January 9, 1891, to buy the palace of the Roznovanu family, as the seat of the City Hall. At that time, the mayor of Iasi was Vasile Pogor. Since then, with some small syncopes, Roznovanu Palace has hosted the administrative headquarters of the city.
