"Three Hierarchs" Church

The monastery of the Holy Three Hierarchs or the church of the Trisfetites was built by Vasile Lupu to serve as a royal necropolis, but it has remained in history for much more than a place of worship.

Inside the churchyard there is a building called "Gothic Hall" where important events in Romanian history and culture took place. The first printing house in Moldavia started operating in 1640 and the first great printed work was "Cazania Romaneasca a lui Varlaam".

In the Gothic Hall there are two marble plaques that testify to the fact that in February 1821, in front of the assembly of etherists and Greeks, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Suceava Veniamin Costache, officiated a service of blessing that started the liberation movement of Greece, led by Prince Alexander Ipsilanti.

The College of Three Hierarchs, also established by Vasile Lupu, is the first Romanian academic environment in Moldova and is built on the model of the Academy in Kiev. The Vasilian Academy functioned until the end of the 19th century and represented the foundation of the Mihăilene Academy, which later became the University of Iași. The poet Mihai Eminescu was part of the examination commission of the Vasile Lupu Normal School at a time when he lived in one of the cells of the monastery.

Today, the Gothic Hall is a place dedicated to early Romanian history and culture. The museum inaugurated in 2001 houses important objects of historical and church heritage and contributes to a better knowledge of Romanian traditions and history in Moldova.
