Heroes's Monument

Monument of the Heroes of the First World War in Galata was erected on the initiative of Queen Maria of Romania through the efforts of the "Cult of Heroes" Society to remember the heroes who fell in the First World War.

The monument - mausoleum was designed by the Romanian engineer Henri Coandă, painted by Ioan Bălău, and the enterprise made by the Giovanni Marcomini brothers. The construction lasted for two years, between 1929 and 1930, and the structure consisted of reinforced concrete, superimposed on three levels with successive withdrawals. The base of the monument represents a solid plate of 20 square meters and a depth of 2 meters where there is a crypt with the bones of the heroes who lost their lives to defend Romania between 1916 and 1918.

The cemetery around this mausoleum consists of 600 small crosses and 6 large crosses representing the 6,000 heroes soldiers and military personnel, who fell on duty in the First World War. The bodies and bones of those buried were brought from within fifteen communes around Iasi and declared heroes of the homeland on April 23, 1930 in the presence of Metropolitan Pimen Georgescu, General Iacob Zadik and Mayor Osvald Racoviță.

The monument was restored within the Centenary Program and open to public once again on June 11, 2021 in the presence of His Eminence the Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina Teofan, the Mayor of Iasi Mihai Chirica, General Ioan Pop and other members of the public administration. The City Hall considered, through the restoration of the monument, its reintegration in the tourist-religious circuit. The location on Galata Hill offers a special viewpoint over the city of Iasi, and through rehabilitation new parking spaces have been created, green spaces and new urban furniture where you can admire the city and pay tribute to the heroes of Romania.
